Median gross rent in Akron is $955 a month, 3rd-highest median rent of Ohio's five largest cities. 49.3% of households rent, so a large share of the 189,691 people who live here deal with landlords, leases and pet policies directly.

An emotional support animal letter is documentation from a licensed mental health professional that you have a disability and that your animal helps with it. In Akron it does the same job as anywhere in Ohio: it supports a reasonable accommodation request when a lease says no pets, limits breeds or caps weight.
Ohio has no statutory waiting period, so an Ohio-licensed therapist can evaluate you and, if you qualify, your letter typically arrives by email about 15 minutes after approval. You talk with a therapist, by phone or video, about how your condition affects daily life and what your animal does for you. They decide; you do not buy an outcome.
Ohio has its own fair housing law, but how its agency treats untrained emotional support animals after HUD's May 2026 change is still settling, so documentation quality matters more than it used to.

Those two numbers explain why pet policies come up so often here. When most of your choices are rentals and each listing competes on price, a no-pet clause, a breed list or a monthly pet charge can take a building off the table.

Local, state and federal rules stack on top of each other here. Each can add protection; none can take away what another gives you.
Our review did not confirm a Akron or county fair housing ordinance covering disability, so this page relies on Ohio and federal law. If one applies to your building, it can only add protection.

Qualifying is about function, not a label. If a condition makes sleep, work, study or relationships genuinely harder and your animal helps, an evaluation is worth having. Frequent examples:
Three steps. You are not charged for a letter unless the therapist approves you.
Start with a short screening so you know whether an evaluation makes sense for you before you book or pay anything.
A professional licensed in Ohio meets you by phone or video. It is a clinical conversation, not a form.
Approval means a signed letter in your inbox shortly after the appointment, on letterhead with the therapist's license details.
$129 for up to two animals. No subscription, no renewal auto-charge, no add-on "registration."
We do not sell certificates, vests or ID cards, because they carry no legal weight and can weaken your request.
Our guidance reflects HUD's May 2026 change and Ohio's own rules, so you are not working from outdated advice.
Your letter confirms a need without naming a diagnosis, and your clinical information is handled under HIPAA.
Email or hand your landlord a short request: you have a disability-related need for your animal and are asking for an exception to the pet rule. Attach the letter.
If the landlord asks follow-up questions, answer about the need, not the diagnosis. Your records stay private.
Note when you sent the request and how they responded. Silence for weeks is itself worth recording.
Ask for the reason in writing, then contact Fair Housing Contact Service or Ohio Civil Rights Commission. A HUD complaint has a one-year window.

Akron property managers see a lot of ESA paperwork. A letter missing any of these is easy to reject.
Out-of-state signatures are the most common reason letters fail.
Managers check it against the Ohio licensing board.
That you have a disability and the animal helps with it — never the diagnosis.
Most landlords treat a letter older than 12 months as stale.
A purchased certificate undermines an otherwise good letter.
A psychiatric service dog is trained to do specific work, such as grounding you during a flashback or guiding you out of a crowd. If that describes your dog, a PSD letter records those tasks, and trained animals are what HUD still enforces for after May 2026.
Pricing
The same flat price as everywhere in Ohio. No subscription, and no charge for a letter unless an Ohio-licensed therapist approves you.
About the PSD letter: it is documentation from a licensed therapist, not a certificate or an ID. Under the ADA, public access comes from your dog being individually trained to do work or tasks for your disability. Businesses are allowed to ask only two questions and are not allowed to require paperwork. Nobody can sell you access rights — anyone who says otherwise is selling a novelty.
You are charged only after a therapist approves you. We may place a temporary authorization hold on your card beforehand to confirm it is valid; a hold is not a charge and is released if you are not approved.
100% refund if your landlord denies your ESA. If your housing provider refuses the accommodation after you submit a letter we issued, we refund what you paid in full. Full terms, including what a claim needs, on our refund policy page.
Questions
Yes, for housing, when it comes from a therapist licensed in Ohio after a real evaluation. It supports a reasonable accommodation request to your landlord; it does not register your animal or give it public access.
Ohio has no statutory waiting period, so an Ohio-licensed therapist can evaluate you and, if you qualify, your letter typically arrives by email about 15 minutes after approval.
Since HUD's May 2026 change, a fee waiver for an untrained emotional support animal is no longer automatic federally. Ask for it in writing; whether it is required now depends on Ohio law and your landlord. Damage is always chargeable. How fees work now →
An association is a housing provider, so it has to consider the request instead of pointing at its own rules. It can still deny on the usual narrow grounds. Requests to HOAs and condo boards →
Yes, if the therapist finds that each animal helps with your disability. The $129 letter covers up to two animals; $199 covers three or more.
There is no fixed legal expiry, but most Akron property managers treat a letter older than 12 months as out of date, especially at lease renewal. Renewing an ESA letter →
No — not in Ohio and not nationally. Registrations, ID cards and vests are products, not legal documents, and attaching one to your request can make it look weaker. Why registries are not documents →
No. Public access belongs to trained service animals under the ADA. A Akron business may decline an emotional support animal, and an ESA letter does not change that.
