ESA letters for autistic adults and children
Autism is a well-established basis for an assistance animal request. The strongest cases are specific about sensory load, transitions and routine.

Autism substantially limits major life activities for many autistic people — communicating, interacting with others, and regulating sensory input are all covered. That makes it a straightforward basis for a housing accommodation request.
For children, the letter is usually written about the child, and the accommodation request is made by the parent or guardian as part of the household. Colleges handle autistic students through disability services, which we cover on the dorm page.
What a clinician is looking for
Not a checklist to perform — a picture of your actual functioning. These are the things that come up in evaluations for autism:
- Sensory sensitivity — sound, light, texture or crowding that becomes genuinely painful
- Difficulty with unexpected changes and transitions
- Meltdowns or shutdowns after sustained social or sensory demand
- Reliance on routine to stay regulated through a day
- Social communication that is exhausting to sustain
- Difficulty living independently without predictable supports
How an animal helps, in terms a clinician can write down
- Predictability. An animal is a fixed, reliable presence in a day full of things that are not.
- Sensory regulation. Deep pressure and repetitive contact are widely used regulation strategies, and animals provide both naturally.
- Recovery after overload. Somewhere quiet to land after a hard day, without the demand of another person.
- Transitions. A consistent routine around the animal gives shape to the parts of the day that are hardest to move through.
Two things worth knowing before you start
Your letter will not name your diagnosis. A landlord is not entitled to it. The letter confirms you have a disability under the Fair Housing Act and that the animal is part of your treatment. That is the legally relevant fact and the only one you owe them.
Your state may have a waiting period. Arkansas, California, Iowa, Louisiana and Montana require a 30-day relationship with the clinician first. Check your state →
What has changed since May 2026
HUD narrowed federal enforcement on May 22, 2026. It now pursues Fair Housing Act complaints only where an animal is individually trained to do work or tasks for the person's disability. That does not invalidate your letter and it does not change what a clinician evaluates, but it does mean your state's law matters more than it used to. The full picture is here.

About the PSD letter: it is documentation from a licensed clinician, not a certificate or an ID. Under the ADA, public access comes from your dog being individually trained to do work or tasks for your disability. Businesses are allowed to ask only two questions and are not allowed to require paperwork. Nobody can sell you access rights — anyone who says otherwise is selling a novelty.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get a letter for my autistic child?
Yes. The evaluation concerns the child, and the accommodation request is made by the parent or guardian for the household. Bring any existing diagnostic report or IEP documentation.
Would a service dog be better?
Sometimes. Autism service dogs are trained for specific tasks such as interrupting self-injury, tethering for wandering, or deep pressure on cue. If your animal does trained tasks, a psychiatric service dog letter may be the stronger document post-2026.
How long does the whole thing take?
In 45 states, most people finish the questionnaire, get scheduled, and have the letter within a day or two — the letter itself lands about 15 minutes after the clinician approves you. In the five waiting-period states, plan on at least 30 days.
What if the clinician says no?
Then they say no, and you are not charged for a letter. That is the trade-off with a real evaluation, and it is also why a real evaluation is worth something to a landlord.
