A short questionnaire tells you whether an emotional support animal is likely to be appropriate, and shows Texas's timeline before you commit.
About 43% of households in Fort Worth rent their home, the lowest renter share among Texas's five largest cities. With a median gross rent of $1,509 a month, the right building is hard enough to find without a pet policy ruling it out.

An emotional support animal letter is documentation from a licensed mental health professional that you have a disability and that your animal helps with it. In Fort Worth it does the same job as anywhere in Texas: it supports a reasonable accommodation request when a lease says no pets, limits breeds or caps weight.
Texas has no statutory waiting period, so a Texas-licensed therapist can evaluate you and, if you qualify, your letter typically arrives by email about 15 minutes after approval. It is a clinical conversation rather than a form, and approval is not guaranteed — which is exactly why a Fort Worth property manager can rely on it.
Texas has its own fair housing law, but how its agency treats untrained emotional support animals after HUD's May 2026 change is still settling, so documentation quality matters more than it used to. Fort Worth adds its own layer: Fort Worth City Code ch. 17.

43% of Fort Worth households rent, the lowest renter share among Texas's five largest cities. Median gross rent is $1,509 a month — 2nd-highest median rent of Texas's five largest cities, against $1,361 in Houston.
Those two numbers explain why pet policies come up so often here. When most of your choices are rentals and each listing competes on price, a no-pet clause, a breed list or a monthly pet charge can take a building off the table.
Fort Worth sits in Tarrant County, Denton County, Johnson County, Parker County and Wise County. Because the city spans more than one county, check which county your building is in if you ever need a county-level agency.

Your rights in Fort Worth come from up to three sources. Here is what each one does now.
Fort Worth City Code ch. 17 — Fort Worth's human relations ordinance bans housing discrimination including disability, and the city is a HUD-certified fair housing (FHAP) agency.
Tex. Prop. Code § 92.026 — What a landlord may request for an assistance animal, and penalties for fake documentation. Complaints: Texas Workforce Commission, Civil Rights Division.
The Fair Housing Act still requires landlords to consider accommodation requests. Since May 22, 2026, HUD itself pursues complaints only for individually trained animals; your private right to sue is unchanged. What changed →

Qualifying is about function, not a label. If a condition makes sleep, work, study or relationships genuinely harder and your animal helps, an evaluation is worth having. Frequent examples:
Three steps. You are not charged for a letter unless the therapist approves you.
A short questionnaire tells you whether an emotional support animal is likely to be appropriate, and shows Texas's timeline before you commit.
You speak with a Texas-licensed therapist about your symptoms and what your animal does for you.
Once approved you receive the letter by email, usually about 15 minutes later, written for housing use and ready to send with your accommodation request.
A card hold confirms the booking. You are charged for a letter only when the therapist issues one.
Most letters reach your inbox about 15 minutes after the therapist approves you.
Every letter is signed by a therapist licensed where you live, with the license number on the page for your landlord to check.
A live appointment with someone who can decline. That is the difference between a letter and a purchased certificate.
Say you have a disability, that you are asking for an accommodation to the pet policy, and attach your letter. No special form is required.
A landlord may verify the need. They are not entitled to your diagnosis or medical records.
Save a copy of everything you send and receive, with dates. Paper trails win disputes.
Ask for the reason in writing, then contact City of Fort Worth Civil Rights Office / Human Relations Commission or Texas Workforce Commission, Civil Rights Division. A HUD complaint has a one-year window.

These are the things a Fort Worth leasing office checks first. Miss one and the request stalls.
Out-of-state signatures are the most common reason letters fail.

That you have a disability and the animal helps with it — never the diagnosis.
Most landlords treat a letter older than 12 months as stale.
A purchased certificate undermines an otherwise good letter.
Some Fort Worth renters find their dog already does trained work for them. In that case a psychiatric service dog letter documents the tasks, and it lines up with HUD's 2026 focus on trained animals.
Pricing
The same flat price as everywhere in Texas. No subscription, and no charge for a letter unless a Texas-licensed therapist approves you.
About the PSD letter: it is documentation from a licensed therapist, not a certificate or an ID. Under the ADA, public access comes from your dog being individually trained to do work or tasks for your disability. Businesses are allowed to ask only two questions and are not allowed to require paperwork. Nobody can sell you access rights — anyone who says otherwise is selling a novelty.
You are charged only after a therapist approves you. We may place a temporary authorization hold on your card beforehand to confirm it is valid; a hold is not a charge and is released if you are not approved.
100% refund if your landlord denies your ESA. If your housing provider refuses the accommodation after you submit a letter we issued, we refund what you paid in full. Full terms, including what a claim needs, on our refund policy page.
