ESA letters for bipolar disorder
Bipolar disorder qualifies readily. The useful conversation with a clinician is about how an animal fits into the routine that keeps you stable.

Bipolar I and II both substantially limit major life activities during episodes, and often between them. Sleep, work, judgment, relationships and self-care are all affected. This is not a borderline case for the disability standard.
What clinicians want to understand is stability management. Bipolar disorder responds to routine more than almost any other condition, and that is exactly the kind of thing an animal supports.
What a clinician is looking for
Not a checklist to perform — a picture of your actual functioning. These are the things that come up in evaluations for bipolar disorder:
- Distinct periods of elevated, expansive or irritable mood, with more energy than usual
- Depressive episodes that interfere with work and self-care
- Sleep disruption that both signals and drives episodes
- Impulsive decisions during elevated periods with lasting consequences
- Difficulty holding a consistent routine, job or living situation
How an animal helps, in terms a clinician can write down
- Sleep and wake anchoring. A fixed feeding and walking schedule holds your day at both ends, and sleep regularity is one of the strongest protective factors in bipolar disorder.
- Grounding during depressive stretches. The same structure that helps in depression applies here.
- A steady presence through mood shifts. Something that does not change when everything else does.
An ESA is not a substitute for psychiatric care in bipolar disorder. Every clinician we work with will say that directly, and a good letter is written alongside treatment rather than instead of it.
Two things worth knowing before you start
Your letter will not name your diagnosis. A landlord is not entitled to it. The letter confirms you have a disability under the Fair Housing Act and that the animal is part of your treatment. That is the legally relevant fact and the only one you owe them.
Your state may have a waiting period. Arkansas, California, Iowa, Louisiana and Montana require a 30-day relationship with the clinician first. Check your state →
What has changed since May 2026
HUD narrowed federal enforcement on May 22, 2026. It now pursues Fair Housing Act complaints only where an animal is individually trained to do work or tasks for the person's disability. That does not invalidate your letter and it does not change what a clinician evaluates, but it does mean your state's law matters more than it used to. The full picture is here.

About the PSD letter: it is documentation from a licensed clinician, not a certificate or an ID. Under the ADA, public access comes from your dog being individually trained to do work or tasks for your disability. Businesses are allowed to ask only two questions and are not allowed to require paperwork. Nobody can sell you access rights — anyone who says otherwise is selling a novelty.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to be in treatment already?
It is not a legal requirement, but for bipolar disorder specifically the clinician will want to know your treatment situation, and will likely encourage psychiatric care if you are not currently in it.
How long does the whole thing take?
In 45 states, most people finish the questionnaire, get scheduled, and have the letter within a day or two — the letter itself lands about 15 minutes after the clinician approves you. In the five waiting-period states, plan on at least 30 days.
What if the clinician says no?
Then they say no, and you are not charged for a letter. That is the trade-off with a real evaluation, and it is also why a real evaluation is worth something to a landlord.
