A short questionnaire tells you whether an emotional support animal is likely to be appropriate, and shows Alabama's timeline before you commit.
Huntsville is Alabama's largest city, with about 233,627 residents in Madison County, Limestone County and Morgan County. Roughly 41.7% of its households rent — the lowest renter share among Alabama's five largest cities — which makes the pet clause in a lease a practical question for a lot of people here.

Think of an ESA letter as evidence, not permission. It is a licensed therapist's written confirmation that you have a disability-related need for your animal, and Huntsville renters use it to ask a landlord to set aside a pet rule as an accommodation.
Alabama has no statutory waiting period, so an Alabama-licensed therapist can evaluate you and, if you qualify, your letter typically arrives by email about 15 minutes after approval. You talk with a therapist, by phone or video, about how your condition affects daily life and what your animal does for you. They decide; you do not buy an outcome.
Alabama has no state fair housing agency, so after HUD's May 2026 change the federal statute and the strength of your documentation carry most of the weight.

41.7% of Huntsville households rent, the lowest renter share among Alabama's five largest cities. Median gross rent is $1,171 a month — the highest median rent of Alabama's five largest cities.
For a Huntsville renter with an assistance animal, the practical problem is rarely the law — it is the listing that says "no pets" or "cats only, under 25 lbs." An accommodation request is how you ask for that rule to be set aside.
Huntsville sits in Madison County, Limestone County and Morgan County. Because the city spans more than one county, check which county your building is in if you ever need a county-level agency.

There is no official list of qualifying conditions. The test is whether a mental or emotional condition substantially limits a major life activity, and whether your animal helps with it. These come up most often:
Your rights in Huntsville come from up to three sources. Here is what each one does now.
Our review did not confirm a Huntsville or county fair housing ordinance covering disability, so this page relies on Alabama and federal law. If one applies to your building, it can only add protection.
No ESA-specific state statute. Complaints: No state fair housing agency — complaints go to HUD Region IV in Atlanta.
The Fair Housing Act still requires landlords to consider accommodation requests. Since May 22, 2026, HUD itself pursues complaints only for individually trained animals; your private right to sue is unchanged. What changed →

Three steps. You are not charged for a letter unless the therapist approves you.
A short questionnaire tells you whether an emotional support animal is likely to be appropriate, and shows Alabama's timeline before you commit.
Your evaluation is with a therapist licensed where you live. They can approve you, and they can decline.
Approval means a signed letter in your inbox shortly after the appointment, on letterhead with the therapist's license details.
We do not sell certificates, vests or ID cards, because they carry no legal weight and can weaken your request.
$129 for up to two animals. No subscription, no renewal auto-charge, no add-on "registration."
Your letter confirms a need without naming a diagnosis, and your clinical information is handled under HIPAA.
Our guidance reflects HUD's May 2026 change and Alabama's own rules, so you are not working from outdated advice.
Say you have a disability, that you are asking for an accommodation to the pet policy, and attach your letter. No special form is required.
A landlord may verify the need. They are not entitled to your diagnosis or medical records.
Note when you sent the request and how they responded. Silence for weeks is itself worth recording.
Ask for the reason in writing, then contact City of Huntsville Human Relations Commission or No state fair housing agency — complaints go to HUD Region IV in Atlanta. A HUD complaint has a one-year window.

Huntsville property managers see a lot of ESA paperwork. A letter missing any of these is easy to reject.
Out-of-state signatures are the most common reason letters fail.
Managers check it against the Alabama licensing board.
That you have a disability and the animal helps with it — never the diagnosis.
Most landlords treat a letter older than 12 months as stale.
A purchased certificate undermines an otherwise good letter.
A psychiatric service dog is trained to do specific work, such as grounding you during a flashback or guiding you out of a crowd. If that describes your dog, a PSD letter records those tasks, and trained animals are what HUD still enforces for after May 2026.
Pricing
The same flat price as everywhere in Alabama. No subscription, and no charge for a letter unless an Alabama-licensed therapist approves you.
About the PSD letter: it is documentation from a licensed therapist, not a certificate or an ID. Under the ADA, public access comes from your dog being individually trained to do work or tasks for your disability. Businesses are allowed to ask only two questions and are not allowed to require paperwork. Nobody can sell you access rights — anyone who says otherwise is selling a novelty.
You are charged only after a therapist approves you. We may place a temporary authorization hold on your card beforehand to confirm it is valid; a hold is not a charge and is released if you are not approved.
100% refund if your landlord denies your ESA. If your housing provider refuses the accommodation after you submit a letter we issued, we refund what you paid in full. Full terms, including what a claim needs, on our refund policy page.
Questions
It is, as long as an Alabama-licensed therapist wrote it after actually evaluating you. Huntsville landlords can verify the license number, and that check is where online-certificate letters fail.

Yes, if the therapist finds that each animal helps with your disability. The $129 letter covers up to two animals; $199 covers three or more.

No. A landlord may verify that you have a disability-related need for the animal. They are not entitled to your diagnosis or your medical records, and a good letter does not include either.
