What a Baton Rouge landlord actually needs from you is short: reliable confirmation, from someone licensed in Louisiana, that you have a disability and that your animal helps with it. That is all an ESA letter is — and a properly written one says nothing more.
Louisiana requires a client–provider relationship of at least 30 days before an ESA letter can issue, so plan on two appointments about a month apart. The evaluation is a real appointment by phone or video, and the therapist can say no. That is what makes the letter hold up when a property manager checks it.
Louisiana has its own fair housing law, but how its agency treats untrained emotional support animals after HUD's May 2026 change is still settling, so documentation quality matters more than it used to.

In a market like this, management companies tend to standardize pet rules across their buildings. The rule you meet at one property is often the rule at the next, which is why knowing how to request an accommodation matters more than finding a pet-friendly unit.

HB 407 (2021), La. R.S. 51:2606.1 — Requires roughly 30 days of active care before an ESA letter issues. Complaints: Louisiana Attorney General / Louisiana Commission on Human Rights. 30-day relationship required before a letter can issue.
The Fair Housing Act still requires landlords to consider accommodation requests. Since May 22, 2026, HUD itself pursues complaints only for individually trained animals; your private right to sue is unchanged. What changed →

Three steps. You are not charged for a letter unless the therapist approves you.
Start with a short screening so you know whether an evaluation makes sense for you before you book or pay anything.
Your evaluation is with a therapist licensed where you live, over two sessions to meet Louisiana's 30-day rule. They can approve you, and they can decline.
If you are approved, your signed letter is emailed, ready to attach to your request to a Baton Rouge landlord.
Our guidance reflects HUD's May 2026 change and Louisiana's own rules, so you are not working from outdated advice.
Your letter confirms a need without naming a diagnosis, and your clinical information is handled under HIPAA.
$129 for up to two animals. No subscription, no renewal auto-charge, no add-on "registration."
We do not sell certificates, vests or ID cards, because they carry no legal weight and can weaken your request.
Say you have a disability, that you are asking for an accommodation to the pet policy, and attach your letter. No special form is required.
If the landlord asks follow-up questions, answer about the need, not the diagnosis. Your records stay private.
Note when you sent the request and how they responded. Silence for weeks is itself worth recording.
Ask for the reason in writing, then contact Louisiana Fair Housing Action Center or Louisiana Attorney General / Louisiana Commission on Human Rights. A HUD complaint has a one-year window.
Template and walkthrough: writing a reasonable accommodation request →
Baton Rouge property managers see a lot of ESA paperwork. A letter missing any of these is easy to reject.
Out-of-state signatures are the most common reason letters fail.
Managers check it against the Louisiana licensing board.
That you have a disability and the animal helps with it — never the diagnosis.
Most landlords treat a letter older than 12 months as stale.
A purchased certificate undermines an otherwise good letter.
A psychiatric service dog is trained to do specific work, such as grounding you during a flashback or guiding you out of a crowd. If that describes your dog, a PSD letter records those tasks, and trained animals are what HUD still enforces for after May 2026.
Pricing
The same flat price as everywhere in Louisiana. No subscription, and no charge for a letter unless a Louisiana-licensed therapist approves you.
About the PSD letter: it is documentation from a licensed therapist, not a certificate or an ID. Under the ADA, public access comes from your dog being individually trained to do work or tasks for your disability. Businesses are allowed to ask only two questions and are not allowed to require paperwork. Nobody can sell you access rights — anyone who says otherwise is selling a novelty.
You are charged only after a therapist approves you. We may place a temporary authorization hold on your card beforehand to confirm it is valid; a hold is not a charge and is released if you are not approved.
100% refund if your landlord denies your ESA. If your housing provider refuses the accommodation after you submit a letter we issued, we refund what you paid in full. Full terms, including what a claim needs, on our refund policy page.
Questions
Yes, for housing, when it comes from a therapist licensed in Louisiana after a real evaluation. It supports a reasonable accommodation request to your landlord; it does not register your animal or give it public access.
Louisiana requires a client–provider relationship of at least 30 days before an ESA letter can issue, so plan on two appointments about a month apart.
Since HUD's May 2026 change, a fee waiver for an untrained emotional support animal is no longer automatic federally. Ask for it in writing; whether it is required now depends on Louisiana law and your landlord. Damage is always chargeable. How fees work now →
Use a therapist licensed in Louisiana. Telehealth crosses state lines but licensure does not, and an out-of-state signature is the most common reason a letter gets rejected.
No. A landlord may verify that you have a disability-related need for the animal. They are not entitled to your diagnosis or your medical records, and a good letter does not include either.
They must consider the request, but may deny it for a direct threat, substantial damage, undue burden, an exempt property or documentation that is not credible. Ask for any denial in writing. Louisiana Fair Housing Action Center can help you respond. If you are denied →

No. Public access belongs to trained service animals under the ADA. A Baton Rouge business may decline an emotional support animal, and an ESA letter does not change that.
