An emotional support animal letter is documentation from a licensed mental health professional that you have a disability and that your animal helps with it. In Grand Rapids it does the same job as anywhere in Michigan: it supports a reasonable accommodation request when a lease says no pets, limits breeds or caps weight.
Michigan has no statutory waiting period, so a Michigan-licensed therapist can evaluate you and, if you qualify, your letter typically arrives by email about 15 minutes after approval. It is a clinical conversation rather than a form, and approval is not guaranteed — which is exactly why a Grand Rapids property manager can rely on it.
Michigan has its own fair housing law, but how its agency treats untrained emotional support animals after HUD's May 2026 change is still settling, so documentation quality matters more than it used to. Grand Rapids adds its own layer: Grand Rapids City Code Title IX, ch. 175 (Secs. 9.935-9.953).

46% of Grand Rapids households rent, 3rd of Michigan's five largest cities by renter share. Median gross rent is $1,266 a month — 3rd-highest median rent of Michigan's five largest cities, against $1,074 in Detroit.
Those two numbers explain why pet policies come up so often here. When most of your choices are rentals and each listing competes on price, a no-pet clause, a breed list or a monthly pet charge can take a building off the table.

Qualifying is about function, not a label. If a condition makes sleep, work, study or relationships genuinely harder and your animal helps, an evaluation is worth having. Frequent examples:
Three steps. You are not charged for a letter unless the therapist approves you.
A short questionnaire tells you whether an emotional support animal is likely to be appropriate, and shows Michigan's timeline before you commit.
You speak with a Michigan-licensed therapist about your symptoms and what your animal does for you.
Once approved you receive the letter by email, usually about 15 minutes later, written for housing use and ready to send with your accommodation request.
A card hold confirms the booking. You are charged for a letter only when the therapist issues one.
Most letters reach your inbox about 15 minutes after the therapist approves you.
Every letter is signed by a therapist licensed where you live, with the license number on the page for your landlord to check.
A live appointment with someone who can decline. That is the difference between a letter and a purchased certificate.
Say you have a disability, that you are asking for an accommodation to the pet policy, and attach your letter. No special form is required.
A landlord may verify the need. They are not entitled to your diagnosis or medical records.
Save a copy of everything you send and receive, with dates. Paper trails win disputes.
Ask for the reason in writing, then contact City of Grand Rapids Office of Diversity and Inclusion (Human Rights Ordinance complaints) or Michigan Department of Civil Rights. A HUD complaint has a one-year window.

Grand Rapids property managers see a lot of ESA paperwork. A letter missing any of these is easy to reject.
Out-of-state signatures are the most common reason letters fail.
Managers check it against the Michigan licensing board.
That you have a disability and the animal helps with it — never the diagnosis.
Most landlords treat a letter older than 12 months as stale.
A purchased certificate undermines an otherwise good letter.
A psychiatric service dog is trained to do specific work, such as grounding you during a flashback or guiding you out of a crowd. If that describes your dog, a PSD letter records those tasks, and trained animals are what HUD still enforces for after May 2026.
Pricing
The same flat price as everywhere in Michigan. No subscription, and no charge for a letter unless a Michigan-licensed therapist approves you.
About the PSD letter: it is documentation from a licensed therapist, not a certificate or an ID. Under the ADA, public access comes from your dog being individually trained to do work or tasks for your disability. Businesses are allowed to ask only two questions and are not allowed to require paperwork. Nobody can sell you access rights — anyone who says otherwise is selling a novelty.
You are charged only after a therapist approves you. We may place a temporary authorization hold on your card beforehand to confirm it is valid; a hold is not a charge and is released if you are not approved.
100% refund if your landlord denies your ESA. If your housing provider refuses the accommodation after you submit a letter we issued, we refund what you paid in full. Full terms, including what a claim needs, on our refund policy page.
Questions
Yes. Grand Rapids follows Michigan and federal fair housing law, and both recognize a letter from a licensed therapist as support for an accommodation request. What it will not do is work in stores, on planes or as a registration.
Grand Rapids also has its own ordinance (Grand Rapids City Code Title IX, ch. 175 (Secs. 9.935-9.953)), which adds a local layer.
Michigan has no statutory waiting period, so a Michigan-licensed therapist can evaluate you and, if you qualify, your letter typically arrives by email about 15 minutes after approval.
Since HUD's May 2026 change, a fee waiver for an untrained emotional support animal is no longer automatic federally. Ask for it in writing; whether it is required now depends on Michigan law and your landlord. Damage is always chargeable. How fees work now →
