About 29.3% of households in Butte rent their home, the lowest renter share among Montana's five largest cities. With a median gross rent of $856 a month, the right building is hard enough to find without a pet policy ruling it out.

Think of an ESA letter as evidence, not permission. It is a licensed therapist's written confirmation that you have a disability-related need for your animal, and Butte renters use it to ask a landlord to set aside a pet rule as an accommodation.
Montana requires a client–provider relationship of at least 30 days before an ESA letter can issue, so plan on two appointments about a month apart. You talk with a therapist, by phone or video, about how your condition affects daily life and what your animal does for you. They decide; you do not buy an outcome.
Montana has its own fair housing law, but how its agency treats untrained emotional support animals after HUD's May 2026 change is still settling, so documentation quality matters more than it used to.

For a Butte renter with an assistance animal, the practical problem is rarely the law — it is the listing that says "no pets" or "cats only, under 25 lbs." An accommodation request is how you ask for that rule to be set aside.

Qualifying is about function, not a label. If a condition makes sleep, work, study or relationships genuinely harder and your animal helps, an evaluation is worth having. Frequent examples:

Three steps. You are not charged for a letter unless the therapist approves you.
Start with a short screening so you know whether an evaluation makes sense for you before you book or pay anything.
You speak with a Montana-licensed therapist about your symptoms and what your animal does for you; Montana law then requires a follow-up at least 30 days later.
If you are approved, your signed letter is emailed, ready to attach to your request to a Butte landlord.
We schedule both Montana appointments, so the letter is compliant the day it issues.
A card hold confirms the booking. You are charged for a letter only when the therapist issues one.
A live appointment with someone who can decline. That is the difference between a letter and a purchased certificate.
Every letter is signed by a therapist licensed where you live, with the license number on the page for your landlord to check.
Say you have a disability, that you are asking for an accommodation to the pet policy, and attach your letter. No special form is required.
A landlord may verify the need. They are not entitled to your diagnosis or medical records.
Note when you sent the request and how they responded. Silence for weeks is itself worth recording.
Ask for the reason in writing, then contact Montana Fair Housing or Montana Human Rights Bureau. A HUD complaint has a one-year window.

A strong MT letter is short and specific. Here is what it needs.
Out-of-state signatures are the most common reason letters fail.
Managers check it against the Montana licensing board.
That you have a disability and the animal helps with it — never the diagnosis.
Most landlords treat a letter older than 12 months as stale.
A purchased certificate undermines an otherwise good letter.
A psychiatric service dog is trained to do specific work, such as grounding you during a flashback or guiding you out of a crowd. If that describes your dog, a PSD letter records those tasks, and trained animals are what HUD still enforces for after May 2026.
Pricing
The same flat price as everywhere in Montana. No subscription, and no charge for a letter unless a Montana-licensed therapist approves you.
About the PSD letter: it is documentation from a licensed therapist, not a certificate or an ID. Under the ADA, public access comes from your dog being individually trained to do work or tasks for your disability. Businesses are allowed to ask only two questions and are not allowed to require paperwork. Nobody can sell you access rights — anyone who says otherwise is selling a novelty.
You are charged only after a therapist approves you. We may place a temporary authorization hold on your card beforehand to confirm it is valid; a hold is not a charge and is released if you are not approved.
100% refund if your landlord denies your ESA. If your housing provider refuses the accommodation after you submit a letter we issued, we refund what you paid in full. Full terms, including what a claim needs, on our refund policy page.

It is, as long as a Montana-licensed therapist wrote it after actually evaluating you. Butte landlords can verify the license number, and that check is where online-certificate letters fail.
