A legitimate ESA letter is one page from a Montana-licensed mental health professional. It is not a certificate, a registration or an ID card, and in Great Falls it is used for one thing: asking a housing provider for an exception to its pet policy.
Montana requires a client–provider relationship of at least 30 days before an ESA letter can issue, so plan on two appointments about a month apart. You talk with a therapist, by phone or video, about how your condition affects daily life and what your animal does for you. They decide; you do not buy an outcome.
Montana has its own fair housing law, but how its agency treats untrained emotional support animals after HUD's May 2026 change is still settling, so documentation quality matters more than it used to.

Pet rules in Great Falls leases usually arrive as a clause you sign without negotiating. A reasonable accommodation request is the one route that asks the landlord to treat your assistance animal differently from a pet.

Therapists do not work from a list of approved diagnoses. They look at how a condition affects your daily life and whether the animal eases it. Common examples among Great Falls clients:
Three steps. You are not charged for a letter unless the therapist approves you.
A short questionnaire tells you whether an emotional support animal is likely to be appropriate, and shows Montana's timeline before you commit.
A professional licensed in Montana meets you by phone or video, then again after the 30-day period Montana requires. It is a clinical conversation, not a form.
Once approved you receive the letter by email, written for housing use and ready to send with your accommodation request.
Your letter confirms a need without naming a diagnosis, and your clinical information is handled under HIPAA.
Our guidance reflects HUD's May 2026 change and Montana's own rules, so you are not working from outdated advice.
We do not sell certificates, vests or ID cards, because they carry no legal weight and can weaken your request.
$129 for up to two animals. No subscription, no renewal auto-charge, no add-on "registration."
Email or hand your landlord a short request: you have a disability-related need for your animal and are asking for an exception to the pet rule. Attach the letter.
A landlord may verify the need. They are not entitled to your diagnosis or medical records.
Note when you sent the request and how they responded. Silence for weeks is itself worth recording.
Ask for the reason in writing, then contact Montana Fair Housing or Montana Human Rights Bureau. A HUD complaint has a one-year window.

These are the things a Great Falls leasing office checks first. Miss one and the request stalls.
Out-of-state signatures are the most common reason letters fail.
Managers check it against the Montana licensing board.
That you have a disability and the animal helps with it — never the diagnosis.
Most landlords treat a letter older than 12 months as stale.
A purchased certificate undermines an otherwise good letter.
A psychiatric service dog is trained to do specific work, such as grounding you during a flashback or guiding you out of a crowd. If that describes your dog, a PSD letter records those tasks, and trained animals are what HUD still enforces for after May 2026.
Pricing
The same flat price as everywhere in Montana. No subscription, and no charge for a letter unless a Montana-licensed therapist approves you.
About the PSD letter: it is documentation from a licensed therapist, not a certificate or an ID. Under the ADA, public access comes from your dog being individually trained to do work or tasks for your disability. Businesses are allowed to ask only two questions and are not allowed to require paperwork. Nobody can sell you access rights — anyone who says otherwise is selling a novelty.
You are charged only after a therapist approves you. We may place a temporary authorization hold on your card beforehand to confirm it is valid; a hold is not a charge and is released if you are not approved.
100% refund if your landlord denies your ESA. If your housing provider refuses the accommodation after you submit a letter we issued, we refund what you paid in full. Full terms, including what a claim needs, on our refund policy page.
Questions
It is, as long as a Montana-licensed therapist wrote it after actually evaluating you. Great Falls landlords can verify the license number, and that check is where online-certificate letters fail.
Montana requires a client–provider relationship of at least 30 days before an ESA letter can issue, so plan on two appointments about a month apart.
Since HUD's May 2026 change, a fee waiver for an untrained emotional support animal is no longer automatic federally. Ask for it in writing; whether it is required now depends on Montana law and your landlord. Damage is always chargeable. How fees work now →
Yes, if the therapist finds that each animal helps with your disability. The $129 letter covers up to two animals; $199 covers three or more.
An association is a housing provider, so it has to consider the request instead of pointing at its own rules. It can still deny on the usual narrow grounds. Requests to HOAs and condo boards →
Yes. You can make an accommodation request during the application as well as after you move in. Send it in writing with your letter, and keep a copy of what you sent and when.
No. Public access belongs to trained service animals under the ADA. A Great Falls business may decline an emotional support animal, and an ESA letter does not change that.
No — not in Montana and not nationally. Registrations, ID cards and vests are products, not legal documents, and attaching one to your request can make it look weaker. Why registries are not documents →
