A short questionnaire tells you whether an emotional support animal is likely to be appropriate, and shows Iowa's timeline before you commit.
Median gross rent in Ankeny is $1,319 a month, the highest median rent of Iowa's five largest cities. 28.7% of households rent, so a large share of the 77,833 people who live here deal with landlords, leases and pet policies directly.

An emotional support animal letter is documentation from a licensed mental health professional that you have a disability and that your animal helps with it. In Ankeny it does the same job as anywhere in Iowa: it supports a reasonable accommodation request when a lease says no pets, limits breeds or caps weight.
Iowa requires a client–provider relationship of at least 30 days before an ESA letter can issue, so plan on two appointments about a month apart. You talk with a therapist, by phone or video, about how your condition affects daily life and what your animal does for you. They decide; you do not buy an outcome.
Iowa has its own fair housing law, but how its agency treats untrained emotional support animals after HUD's May 2026 change is still settling, so documentation quality matters more than it used to.

Those two numbers explain why pet policies come up so often here. When most of your choices are rentals and each listing competes on price, a no-pet clause, a breed list or a monthly pet charge can take a building off the table.

Therapists do not work from a list of approved diagnoses. They look at how a condition affects your daily life and whether the animal eases it. Common examples among Ankeny clients:
Your rights in Ankeny come from up to three sources. Here is what each one does now.
Our review did not confirm a Ankeny or county fair housing ordinance covering disability, so this page relies on Iowa and federal law. If one applies to your building, it can only add protection.

Three steps. You are not charged for a letter unless the therapist approves you.
A short questionnaire tells you whether an emotional support animal is likely to be appropriate, and shows Iowa's timeline before you commit.
You speak with an Iowa-licensed therapist about your symptoms and what your animal does for you; Iowa law then requires a follow-up at least 30 days later.
Once approved you receive the letter by email, written for housing use and ready to send with your accommodation request.
$129 for up to two animals. No subscription, no renewal auto-charge, no add-on "registration."
We do not sell certificates, vests or ID cards, because they carry no legal weight and can weaken your request.
Our guidance reflects HUD's May 2026 change and Iowa's own rules, so you are not working from outdated advice.
Your letter confirms a need without naming a diagnosis, and your clinical information is handled under HIPAA.
Put it in writing. Two or three sentences are enough, plus your letter; a landlord's own "ESA form" is optional, not a requirement.
Verification of the license is fair; a demand for your medical file is not.
Dates, emails, the lease clause and any reply. If this turns into a complaint, the record is the case.
Ask for the reason in writing, then contact Iowa Civil Rights Commission. A HUD complaint has a one-year window.

These are the things an Ankeny leasing office checks first. Miss one and the request stalls.
Out-of-state signatures are the most common reason letters fail.

That you have a disability and the animal helps with it — never the diagnosis.
Most landlords treat a letter older than 12 months as stale.
A purchased certificate undermines an otherwise good letter.
Some Ankeny renters find their dog already does trained work for them. In that case a psychiatric service dog letter documents the tasks, and it lines up with HUD's 2026 focus on trained animals.
Pricing
The same flat price as everywhere in Iowa. No subscription, and no charge for a letter unless an Iowa-licensed therapist approves you.
About the PSD letter: it is documentation from a licensed therapist, not a certificate or an ID. Under the ADA, public access comes from your dog being individually trained to do work or tasks for your disability. Businesses are allowed to ask only two questions and are not allowed to require paperwork. Nobody can sell you access rights — anyone who says otherwise is selling a novelty.
You are charged only after a therapist approves you. We may place a temporary authorization hold on your card beforehand to confirm it is valid; a hold is not a charge and is released if you are not approved.
100% refund if your landlord denies your ESA. If your housing provider refuses the accommodation after you submit a letter we issued, we refund what you paid in full. Full terms, including what a claim needs, on our refund policy page.
Questions
Yes. Ankeny follows Iowa and federal fair housing law, and both recognize a letter from a licensed therapist as support for an accommodation request. What it will not do is work in stores, on planes or as a registration.
Iowa requires a client–provider relationship of at least 30 days before an ESA letter can issue, so plan on two appointments about a month apart.
Since HUD's May 2026 change, a fee waiver for an untrained emotional support animal is no longer automatic federally. Ask for it in writing; whether it is required now depends on Iowa law and your landlord. Damage is always chargeable. How fees work now →
There is no fixed legal expiry, but most Ankeny property managers treat a letter older than 12 months as out of date, especially at lease renewal. Renewing an ESA letter →
No — not in Iowa and not nationally. Registrations, ID cards and vests are products, not legal documents, and attaching one to your request can make it look weaker. Why registries are not documents →
No. Public access belongs to trained service animals under the ADA. A Ankeny business may decline an emotional support animal, and an ESA letter does not change that.
Yes. You can make an accommodation request during the application as well as after you move in. Send it in writing with your letter, and keep a copy of what you sent and when.
